Packaging supplier DISC, formerly known as Disc Graphics, has received
recognition from Sappi Fine Paper for its Promotional Calendar Program. The company’s 2011 calendar, “Packaged…Naturally,” was honored with a Bronze Award in the “Printer’s Own Promotion” category of the 14th annual Sappi North American Printers of the Year Competition. The Sappi award is considered to be one of the world’s most respected and prestigious accolades in print communication.

“We are very excited to be numbered among the elite winners in the preeminent Sappi competition,” says Margaret Krumholz, president of DISC. “It is an acknowledgement of the high level of commitment, craftsmanship and creativity of the DISC team who produced this year’s innovative calendar.”

More than 2,000 entries in ten categories were critiqued for overall impact, degree of technical difficulty, design and innovation, and printing excellence by Sappi’s panel of judges. The panel consisted of four star players in the industry: Lauren Elliott, principal of Wicked Good Print Production of San Francisco; Bill Garno, director of Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT) Printing Applications Laboratory (PAL); Malcolm Keif, professor in the
Graphic Communication Department of Cal Poly; and Ken Lantz, North American managing director of the Business Unit Hi Resolution for Kinetic in New York.

“The theme of our calendar, Packaged…Naturally, was inspired by natural packaging that sustains or protects life,” says John Rebecchi, senior vice president of marketing and new business development for DISC. “We selected Sappi’s premium, sustainable McCoy paper (10% PCW, FSC and SFI-certified*) to enhance the deep colors, varying tones and fine detailing of our design. It features stunning photographs of the expected – eggs, peapods and walnuts – and some surprising images – a kangaroo pouch, a honeycomb and a turtle shell. The natural world inspires us not just to focus on what exists, but to change our view of what is possible. That is something that our clients, who look forward to receiving our calendar each year, expect of us.”

Although most of this project was produced using 4-color offset lithography, there are two photographs printed with the 6-color Hexachrome process, and one that was digitally printed. The images were enhanced tospectacular effect with the application of reticulating technology, in-line gloss UV coating,
and deep sculptured embossing; hot foil stamping and dimensional coating were added toseveral images. The outer cover, which wraps around the calendar, was printed on 120# gloss cover stock and finished with a rich soft touch coating and deep sculptured embossing. The photos, printed on 80# gloss cover, were spiral bound to the outer cover, which is secured with a magnetic closure. The calendar grid pages utilized Sappi’s proprietary silk finish on 80# cover stock.
